Built around the Renesas RZ family of microprocessors, MistySOM enables efficient and flexible development of embedded compute applications.
Ruggedized for industrial temperatures and offering super long term firmware support via a CIP kernel based Linux BSP. They include a dual core Cortex-A55, single core Cortex-M33 CPU, 32 GB eMMC, and 2 GB DDR4.
MistySOM is available in two versions:
MistySOM is ruggedized for industrial temperatures, offers super long term firmware support with a CIP kernel based Linux BSP, and supports dual ethernet and CANBus interfaces.
To enable rapid implementation of either MistySOM-G2L and MistySOM-V2L into your next product, we offer MistyCarrier (MW-V2L-G2L-I-WWB-V0), a carrier board designed with low power in mind.
Download the MW-G2L product brief.
MistySOM-G2L (MW-G2L-E32G-D2G-I-WX-V0) is ideal for use in industrial and commercial computing applications where low power, reliability and costs are critical. Images and video can be captured through the 4 lane MIPI-CSI interface and with the onboard codec efficiently h.264 encoded.

MistySOM-V2L (MW-V2L-E32G-D2G-I-WX-V0) includes all the features of MistySOM-G2L with the addition of a DRP-AI NPU, making it well suited for low power object detection, classification and localization. The DRP-AI NPU enables Jetson Nano-like performance for embedded video applications while using 50% less power.
MistySOM-V2L supports multiple AI frameworks. ONNX format models are supported by the DRP-AI Translator. Other formats, including PyTorch and TensorFlow, are supported via the DRP-AI TVM. Renesas maintains a list of AI models that Renesas has verified for conversion with the DRP-AI TVM.

MistyCarrier (MW-V2L-G2L-I-WWB-V0) enables a quick way to start development of customized solutions and is designed with low power, industrial applications in mind.
MistyCarrier includes sense resistors for measuring system currents and jumpers to disable interfaces, an MCU allowing ultra-low power sleep state for the system (which should be at or below the self-discharge rate of standard lithium batteries), and an industrially rated super capacitor to support the RTC without a battery.
MistyWest is committed to supporting all MistySOM customers. We aresourcing all carrier board design files and supportive documentation to our public GitHub.

This latest video shows both a MistySOM-V2L and Nvidia Jetson system with their cameras exposed to the same scene and running independent object detection programs in parallel.
As you can see from the screen in the middle, MistySOM outperforms the Nvidia Jetson in terms of power consumption and heat generation by a considerable margin.
Included in every DevKit you pre-order is MistyCarrier: a carrier board designed with low power in mind to enable rapid implementation of both the MistySOM-G2L and MistySOM-V2L into your next product.
Feel free to share this video in your networks with other interested parties who could benefit from including MistySOM in their next product.
Bring-up testing is going well. Here you can see the MistySOM-G2L streaming video via MistyCarrier and gstreamer.
We've created a Wiki for this project on GitHub and will be hosting more documentation for MistySOM in the coming days.

The development of the SoM and Carrier boards are currently underway. There were some design challenges we had to navigate around.
We have been working with Renesas closely to review our designs and we are now laying out the PCBs.
Fig. 1: SoM PCB layout (in progress)
Fig. 2: Carrier PCB layout (in progress)
We have completed the schematic and have built out a BOM. To avoid any procurement issues, we have identified and ordered all the critical components (ICs, connectors, crystals), and received ~90% of those ordered.
For cameras, we are moving forward with the Google Coral, despite it being end-of-life, for our initial alpha testing. We have procured a limited number of cameras, some of which will be made available during ordering.
For future builds, we are in communications with specific camera OEMs to partner with us to provide options beyond our alpha units.
Ron has been working on getting the initial kernel configurations & drivers ready.
Alpha Units - October 25th, 2021
GroupGets Campaign Launch - October 31st, 2021
Boards Ready for Delivery - February 1, 2022
Please note: We will contact you for more details for the Alpha Test Program.

MistyWest Introduces a Low Power SoM Focused on AI Vision
Author: James Lewis, Hackster.io
Date Published: February 06, 2022
When an IoT device needs AI-based vision, the trade-off between processing capability and power consumption can be tricky — especially for battery-based designs. Also, where there is high power consumption, there is heat which might mean bulky heat sinking. Fortunately, Canada-based engineering design group MistyWest partnered with Renesas to address these challenges. The result is a battery-powered system-on-a-module for AI vision applications called MistySOM.
