Product Description

This is a limited pre-production release to get more systems into hands of the community. We hope you're as excited as we are to experiment with the i.MX8M mini and explore different applications for the platform. Once this campaign closes, we will ship from stock of already built and tested units.

kimχ micro is a small and spicy open hardware embedded SBC that offers tons of versitility for many different applications.

 

Features

Application Processor

This project was undertaken with video encoding/decoding and wireless connectivity in mind, so the i.MX8M Mini variant supports 1080p60 hardware video encode/decode.

Mini PCIe

The board can host a half- or full-mini PCIe module as often used for high-power wifi chipsets. Mini PCIe is also perfect for other types of wireless such as LTE and LoRa radios.

USB-C

The board has a full-featured USB-C port with power source and sink capabilities, as well as support for battery charging and power.

Expansion

To enable different applications, kimχ micro has high-density expansion connectors and a standard add-on module specification, as well as a Qwiic connector for rapid prototyping or simple sensor integration.

Note

The v0.91 board expansion headers are not 100% IO compatible with the forthcoming production release. A hardware modification is possible to jumper 5V to the expansion header so that lids can charge the battery on the v0.91 boards. Lids developed for v0.92 will work on this v0.91 hardware, but they wouldn't charge the battery without this.

Why GroupGets?

We have 8 boards up for grabs and with the supply chain constraints we don't know when we can make enough more to justify a production run. We are deciding to therefore do a very small release here to hopefully recruit some more lid developers to help build out the ecosystem. We are selling these for less than cost based on the size of the last prototype run.
