As seen on Makezine, the DIY-Thermocam is a do-it-yourself infrared camera kit targeted at the FLIR Lepton 3.x 160x120 LWIR camera core and the Teensy 3.6 ARM Cortex M4 MCU. It has recently updated software for the 160x120 radiometric Lepton 3.5 and updated mechanicals for the improved ArduCAM-M-2MP visible camera. It takes excellent thermal images as shown in the gallery below and was created by Max Ritter in Germany to be very hackable with its modular construction and open source software. We supported his early efforts to build the kit and continue to host it as he continues to innovate it.

Lepton 3 vs 2.5

If you already have a Lepton and are looking for new uses for it, this is the perfect project but be ready to solder wires, install open source software, and perform mechanical assembly. If this sounds daunting, then maybe it's not the right fit for your skills at this time. We'll do our best to help though. There is no pre-assembly option at this time.

Important Notes

  • Make sure to add a FLIR Lepton and Breakout board below if you do not already have both. They are critical components for this kit but many of our users likely already have them.
  • Wire and heat wrap/electrical tape not included.
  • The LiPo Battery is no longer included due to shipping issues. You can find the recommended battery at Aliexpress.com and Ebay.com. More info about the battery is available on the DIY-Thermocam GitHub page.

Important Information about shipping

  • The PureThermal 1/2 with Radiometric FLIR Lepton 3.5 requires specialized software to show radiometry such as GetThermal.
  • All international customers that are ordering any Thermal Imaging Camera will be required to fill out an End Use Statement document before shipment. Once you place your order we will email you with the document within one business day.

FLIR Lepton 3.0

The FLIR Lepton 3.0 has a resolution of 160x120 pixels or 2x that of Lepton 2.x. You no longer need to scavenge them from other FLIR products, just add it here! A Lepton is required for the DIY Thermocam's operation. Add Lepton 3 here if you don't already have a Lepton to plug into the kit or add Lepton 2.5 above if you prefer a radiometric Lepton.

PureThermal 2 is a hackable thermal webcam for the FLIR Lepton (2.x - 3.x) LWIR camera core. It is the result of lisetining to our thousands of PureThermal 1 users and giving them what they want: four mounting holes, pads for optional EM shielding, less complex circuitry, and perhaps best of all, USB DFU. That's right, a JTAG breakout board will no longer be required to update PureThermal 2. This is a development kit ready to be embedded into a production system.
