Product Description

This is a Real Time Location System (RTLS) commonly used for indoor asset tracking applications. Although the system comes pre-programmed and works out of the box, we have also included much of the source design files under a non exclusive, perpetual, royalty-free license in order to allow you to build from scratch should you like.

The system consists of 4 components:
1. BLE Beacon
2. BLE to Wifi Gateway
3. Electric Imp's IoT Backend
4. Losant application specific dashboard, data storage, and data analytics

Their are multiple applications for this RTLS with some requiring more than one gateway, for more information please see APPLICATION LIMITATION section below. All of the applications can track as many BLE Sensor Beacons as you would like to add to the system.

Your building's WiFi credentials are easily uploaded to the gateways using the Electric Imp BlinkUp technology. This will then also automatically register the device with the Imp Cloud, and subsequently with the RTLS Application on Losant.

Once the gateway is configured it will automatically start picking up beacon sensor data and RSSI broadcasts. Utilizing the RTLS application, you can upload a floor map, register specific gateways with specific locations on the map, and visually log/plot beacon location and sensor data. Possible Use Cases

Quickly find needed tools in a factory, hangars, and work areas such as ladders, tool boxes, carts, emergency equipment, forklifts etc.

Spare Parts
Manage and utilize parts left unaccounted for. Create alerts when parts stay in specific areas for extended periods of time.

Production / Inventory
Manage your products: keep track of where they are and create alerts when they are moved from specific areas. Understand the storage environment with a variety of sensors.

Track in real-time dangerous items such as moving vehicles or hazardous material within a location.

Personnel Movement
Understand real-time employee location and path history. Analyze workplace patterns, pathway effectiveness and hot zones; both in real-time and through historical data.

Safely account for every employee in real-time in case of emergency; Designate dangerous areas with geofences, and create alerts when non-qualified personnel enter those areas. Know where your team members, and people you need to collaborate with are, at any time.


With only one gateway a limited subset of functionalities are possible. Users will be able to detect whether a beacon is in proximity of the gateway and will be able to assess whether the beacon is moving towards or away from the gateway.

With two gateways beacons will be able to be directionally tracked across multiple zones.

BLE-to-WiFi Gateway


The BLE to WiFi bridge is powered by the Electric Imp 004. It is powered by 2 double A batteries with an optional USB-A powered adapter. This is a securely booted device that is not re-programmable and works out of the box with the software application and mobile app configurator.

Bluetooth Low Energy Asset Tracking Beacon with a variety of sensors and rechargeable battery. Any number of beacons can be configured to communicate with a BLE-Wifi Gateway Network. This device can be reprogrammed through a JTAG interface.

The PCB has 1 onboard RF Module. The module is a Rigado BMD-350 BLE module that contains the nRF52 processor and BLE chipset. The module has the following specifications

The asset tracker remains in deep sleep unless it is in motion. It will periodically check in to status blip. While in motion the device will constantly send data via the beacon.

Future revisions could have the check in interval changed via OTA updates from the gateway.



This gateway is identical to the configured gateway above except it is configured in development mode and is not connected to the RTLS mobile application or software dashboard. This gateway can be used to build custom applications and includes example code to get you started.

    Approximately what sort of coverage does each gateway provide? If I wanted to track something in an open plan office (with those self supported partition walls) the size of two basketball courts what would be the recommended number of gateways?

    Three gateways should be sufficient to cover the space, outfitted as you have described. The gateways are also equipped to communicate over Bluetooth 5.0 which has approximately 3 times the range of Bluetooth 4.2 (up to 800 ft direct line of site).

    Apart from providing additional coverage, does having four (or more) gateways covering an area provide a more accurate location?
    If I wanted to feed the locations to my own controller should I be looking at the development version?

    Four gateways will provide slightly more precise and reliable rssi readings for the environment you are describing. You can use the normal gateway to feed locations to your controller, either directly from the gateway or from the web application.
