MistyWest is an engineering product development consultancy whose mission is to accelerate the world's transition to a sustainable future through the design of intelligent connected devices. We've worked on many low power device applications, from polar bear tracking devices to sensors that enable subsurface discovery for ethical mining.
Low power electronics and firmware are challenging to develop, and often, SOMs do not enable low power applications. The MistySOM is built from the ground up to enable battery powered computer vision applications.
Harnessing the power of the Renesas RZ/V2L microprocessor with a dedicated Neural Processing Unit, MistySOM is capable of performing AI computer vision tasks at 50% lesser power than the other processors in the market. MistySOM delivers high-speed AI inference at low power consumption, accelerated by the onboard NPU that supports standard ONNX ML models. Images can be captured through the MIPI-CSI interface and h.264 encoded.
The SOM will be ideal for applications which require object detection and image classification in a small battery powered system. Thanks to its low power requirements and the built-in AI capabilities, the computing platform can solve challenging power problems that are commonplace in today’s IoT environments.

The MistySOM carrier board product brief specifies how it enables the efficient use of MistySOM as a development platform. It features components rated at industrial temperature ranges to satisfy challenging end-use requirements.

The development of the SoM and Carrier boards are currently underway. There were some design challenges we had to navigate around.
We have been working with Renesas closely to review our designs and we are now laying out the PCBs.

We have completed the schematic and have built out a BOM. To avoid any procurement issues, we have identified and ordered all the critical components (ICs, connectors, crystals), and received ~90% of those ordered.
For cameras, we are moving forward with the Google Coral, despite it being end-of-life, for our initial alpha testing. We have procured a limited number of cameras, some of which will be made available during ordering.
For future builds, we are in communications with specific camera OEMs to partner with us to provide options beyond our alpha units.
Ron has been working on getting the initial kernel configurations & drivers ready.

Taylor has over 15 years of experience working in hardware product development and is a founding employee at MistyWest. His background in engineering physics and Steve-wrangling skills make him a cornerstone Westie. He loves the smell of hard problems in the morning, in addition to coffee, and when he’s not at the office you can find him repeatedly answering the question 'why' from his toddler, while cooking dinner with a baby strapped to his chest.

Miroslav is an Electronics Engineer with expertise in analog, digital and embedded system design for telecommunications, wireless communications, professional audio, industrial and consumer applications. Outside of the work, he enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking, skiing, and biking, or staying inside with a good book or movie.

As a Firmware Engineer with an education in Electrical Engineering from Switzerland and 19 years of experience, Ron has enjoyed exposure to a variety of industries, including smart city technologies, telecommunications & networking, closed caption camera systems, ag-tech or sensor technologies. With his love for the 1s and 0s in computer technology and his exposure in the FOSS community, one of Ron’s hands continuously is on the pulse of new developments in the industry. He thrives when working with others and is passionate about driving projects over the finish line with the team. In his free time, he enjoys hiking, travelling, the outdoors or exploring new places.

Shirin received a PhD degree from Simon Fraser University, with expertise lying at the intersection of electrical/ control systems engineering. She has a passion for designing, troubleshooting, testing and assembling electrical circuits and sensors, and enjoys challenging herself by solving complex engineering problems and bringing creative solutions which can have a positive impact on people and society. Outside of work, she enjoys hiking, exploring new places, and nature photography.

Daniel has a degree in Electronics Engineering from Simon Fraser University. In his 10 years in the industry, he has brought prototypes from initial sketches to mass production, using his experience to guide complex problems through schematic capture and PCB layout to a thoughtful, finished product.
